How to Make Perfume With Essential Oils

Many of us are looking for ways to remove toxic chemicals and synthetics from our environment. We teach about making “Green” cleaning products that allow us to clean our homes naturally, and also about our internal environment. Most of us use essential oils to keep ourselves and our loved ones healthy and, of course, know that most essential oils have amazing aromas.  

Have you ever thought about creating a natural perfume? At times, there seems to be a separation between using essential oils therapeutically and just aromatically. How about obtaining both of these factors with a wonderful, natural perfume?

How to combine essential oils for perfumes

There are some fabulous classes that teach you how to create amazing aromas. There are lots of terms to know when it comes to creating a perfume. You are probably already familiar with the most common terms that are used, like top notes, middle notes (which are also referred to as “heart notes”) and base notes. Another perfuming term, “fixatives,” are that which hold the notes or aromas of essential oils together so the perfume can last longer on the skin. You can also choose whether you want to create a solid perfume or one that is alcohol-based. Both of these are wonderful choices, but one of our personal favorites (and really easy to make) is a roll-on perfume. These roll-ons are very popular, not just because they are easy to make but also because they are really convenient to take with you on the go or when traveling.

Once you have your rollerball (our personal choice is the pretty green glass rollers), add your favorite carrier to the bottle. We love to use jojoba because it is a wax and has a very long shelf life, so you don’t have to worry about your perfume smelling rancid. That’s very important when you are trying to create a lovely aroma!

Here is one of our favorite floral perfume blends:

5 drops Jasmine Sambac Absolute (Jasmine sambac)

8 drops White Ginger Lily (Hedychium coronarium)

10 drops Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis)

You can also create wonderful aromas using other essential oils that can create a spicy, woodsy, or musky aroma. Sometimes, the oils or absolutes that are included in a perfume blend can be on the pricey side, such as Oud aka Agarwood (Aquilaria crassna), Sandalwood (Santalum spicatum), Balsam poplar (Populus balsamifera), Benzoin oleoresin (Styrex benzoin) and Vanilla oleoresin (Vanilla planifolia). Try using our Vanilla infused jojoba as a base. The options are endless!
